CREATIVE RETREATS
CREATIVE TRAVEL + ADVENTURE + VOLUNTEERING
What is creative travel?
Creative travel is a form of adventure travel, which includes many of the traits of adventure travel --travel off the beaten track, volunteering and action sports-- but with the emphasis being on creative endeavors while on your vacation. For example, filmmaking a documentary while volunteering in an orphanage in Nepal, making a short fiction film while on a surf and skate program in Fiji, a salsa dance holiday in Brazil, or a photography trip to the Andes. The main focus becomes the artistic activity, but does not take away from the adventure of the location.
What kind of volunteering will I do?
Volunteering is a very important part of the programs with Barefeet Adventures. While our vacations are based on fun and adventure, we are also firm believers in eco-tourism --which in our case means, giving back to the community, helping the environment, animal welfare, employing locals, and teaching our skills to the community. Volunteering will vary from one location to the next, much of the volunteering may include teaching your newly-found filmmaking (or other creative skills) to kids, teens or adults in the community, or perhaps volunteering with a local NGO in wildlife maintenance, or attending to their marketing needs, ot maybe even teaching locals creative skills, literacy skills or computer skills. Generally, the morning might be spent volunteering for a few hours, and the afternoon reserved for your creative endeavors, or vice versa.
What you must remember as a filmmaker, artist or photographer, is that these experiences will help you in the filmmaking and other creative processes. As you are new to the location, it will help you to learn more about the place, culture, and its people, so when filming time comes around you have a better grasp on how to communicate with local actors and crew, not to mention that your time spent observing your surroundings will make for a more authentic film.
PROGRAMS INCLUDE: Equipment hire (different for each program), full time use of our classroom/office location, accommodation, teachers, local tour guide, camping fees and transport for local trips, volunteer fees, PETA donation, international film festival entry, final performance/event/gallery (depending on each program), and goodbye dinner.
