Amethyst Origins

Amethyst is a violet/purple variety of quartz that has been widely used since ancient times, included in rosaries and prayer beads and important ornaments throughout many cultures. The meanings and uses or beliefs around Amethyst have varied over time and across cultures, but it has always remained one of the most sacred stones. In Ancient Greek culture it was believed to protect against drunkenness and overindulgence, and was therefore used in many drinking vessels and was believed to prevent intoxification; Medieval European soldiers were also known to wear amethyst stones as protection in battle and believed that amethysts could heal people and keep them cool-headed. Amethyst gems have also been found in ancient Anglo-Saxon graves; In ancient Chinese culture, Amethyst was used as a powerful stone, able to remove negative energies and drive away the inconveniences and upheavals of day-to-day life. In modern times, and with the popularity and trend with Feng Shui, Amethyst focuses more on wealth and abundance.

Amethyst was considered one of the world's most precious stones up until the 1900's, but with the discovery of large deposits in locations such as Brazil, it has lost most of its value and is now only considered a semiprecious stone.... nevertheless still as powerful and valued by those who appreciate the power of crystals. The largest amethyst concentrations are found in volcanic rocks, with the largest deposits in Brazil and Uruguay. Prior to South America's rise to the top of the Amethyst ladder, most Amethysts came out of Russia, Siberia and in North America, predominantly in Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maine and Colorado. The largest mine being in Ontario, Canada.
