Aventurine origins

Its name derives from the Italian all’avventura, meaning "by chance" --ultimately, referring to the notion of being in the right place at the right time. Throughout the ages and many cultures, Aventurine has been known as 'the lucky gem'. This blue-green gem is 2.5 million years old at its origin, however it did not become popular in Western cultures until the 17th century when a glass maker accidentally spilled copper flecks into a vat of melting blue-green glass, only to find a delightful result of irredescent sparkles reflected within it upon its finish. This glass became popular in the jewelry of the time, later lending its name to the now Aventurine gemstone, which it resembled so closely.

 

Meanwhile, in other cultures around the world, people found many uses for this blue-green wonder. In Ethiopian cultures for example, Aventurine was used to make different kinds of tools, including axes, and tools that would bring luck and ease to the user when building, constructing or hunting; while in another continent far away, the Ancient Tibetans used Aventurine to adorn their religious statues’ eyes, believing the stone would increase the powers of their deities. In various parts of South America, Aventurine was called 'The Stone of the Amazons' and was said to protect the shields of Amazonian Queens and Amazon Warriors.

The majority of green and blue-green Aventurine originates in the continent of India, mostly around Chennai and Mysore, however Avventurine is also found in the wilds of the Amazon jungle, in the colorful landscapes of Brazil, the lush skyscraping mountains of Chile, the high sierras of Spain and and the rugged lands of Russia.
